Salt water systems
A Salt Chlorinator is a superior alternative to liquid or tablet chlorine. It will keep your swimming pool clean and clear but without the problems of over stabilising caused by normal pool tablets. The chlorine generated from the chlorinator will leave your feeling soft and soothing and keep your pool just as clean. A teaspoon of salt per gallon of pool water is all you need.
The benefits of salt systems in pools are the convenience and the constant delivery of pure chlorine-based sanitizer. The reduction of irritating chloramides versus traditional chlorinating methods and the “softening” effect of the electrolytic process reducing dissolved alkali minerals in the water are also perceived as benefits. For some people that have sensitivities to chlorine, these systems may be less offensive. Also the salt in the water reduces eye irritation due to reduced osmosis from inside the eyeball.
A salt water chlorine generator (SWG) uses electricity to convert salt into chlorine. As the chlorine gets used up, it turns back into salt, ready to be reused. With a SWG, you are still using chlorine, the SWG simply takes care of adding the chlorine for you.
The salt levels used vary somewhat between models, commonly they are around 3,000 ppm. These levels are far lower than ocean water, which is around 35,000 ppm. Most people will be just barely able to taste the salt. In addition to allowing the SWG to work, adding salt also improves the subjective feel of the water.
SWGs are designed to produce small amounts of chlorine continuously. This is perfect for day to day use and actually allows you to use a slightly lower chlorine levels than you need when adding chlorine manually.
Combined with a pH dosing pump you can drastically reduce the amount of time spent on balancing the water so you can spend more time swimming and less time dealing with green water. If you also have a pool cover you can practically eliminate maintenance during the winter season.
